The queen of the gemstones and the most powerful precious stone in the universe, Ruby is largely associated with love, attraction, and passion. It is worn and liked by almost everyone, particularly women. As the color of love is depicted as red, so is the color of this incredibly beautiful stone. The warm red color of Ruby gives the sense of vitality and verve.

One can say that Ruby is a perfect stone as it contains everything that is required to carve a beautiful jewel out of it i.e. the ideal hardness, magnificence, splendid color, and outstanding radiance.

For a long period of almost 2000 years, the classical country of Ruby has been considered as India because of the splendor and luxury of the sovereignty. Ruby was the charm of the emperors and the elite class people in ancient India, which used to add more allure and glamour to their royalty.

Ruby adorns the insignia of a lot of imperial households in the world even today.

Where is Ruby found?

The Mogok valley in upper Myanmar is considered to be the major source of Ruby. This region is famous for the finest Rubies ever mined. The “Pigeon’s Blood” Ruby is the legacy of this area to the world.

Rubies have also been historically mined in the countries, like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Thailand, and Cambodia. The lighter shades of Ruby, which are often termed as “Pink Sapphires” are mined chiefly in Sri Lanka.

Subsequent to the World War II, Ruby deposits were found in Tanzania, Vietnam, Madagascar, Nepal, and Tajikistan.

More recently, a number of deposits of larger Rubies are found in the ice shelves of Greenland.

Ruby in Zoisite can help cure problems allied with the reproductive organs and fertility, in both the genders. It is most cooperative after a miscarriage or hysterectomy. Ruby in Zoisite is also useful in combating infections caused by bacteria.

The other varieties of corundum are Sapphires. Among the four precious stones of the world, Ruby is also the one other than Diamond, Emerald, and Sapphire.

Ruby weighs 9.0 on the Moh’s scale of mineral hardness. It is formed in bipyramidal, prismatic tabular or rhombohedral crystals and has a vitreous gleam. The most valuable Rubies that are found in the shades of bright and luminous red are known as, “Pigeon’s Blood”. All the natural Rubies have some or the other kind of impurities and inclusions of Rutile needles, like silk, into it.

If Rubies are cut in a cabochon, they display the rare cat’s eye or chatoyancy effect.

I have seen this gemstone. Sometimes it reveals red shade and sometimes pink. Is there any difference between these two hues?

Hi Sara, thanks for giving your time. Actually ruby comes in 2-3 colors and the hues range from one shade to another even in a single raw form. So, when the people cut it in pieces then color of the raw divides accordingly. The gem piece reveals its own color that it gets from its natural form.

Please suggest as I have heard that all the gemstones are not good for every person. It depends upon the birth date and Zodiac of the wearer.
