Chain Bag Design Row - Stella McCartney Alleges Steve Madden of Stealing Design

Steve Madden is once again in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. This time it’s probably a court case that’s drawing media attention. Stella McCartney is reportedly fuming with rage at Steve Madden for stealing her signature bag design and claiming it to be his own.

McCartney’s team has allegedly sued Steve Madden for making a poor copy of the Falabella Bag and branding it as BTotally bag.

The suit, a copy of which has been leaked to the media, says that long after the Falabella collection of bags became prominent in the fashion industry, and for which McCartney had obtained design patent protection, the renowned American shoes and accessories designer started importing and selling a tote bag that was nothing but a “poorly-made copy” of the original design.

The bag in questiondesigned by Stella McCartney is very popular in the fashion world and has garnered cult-like following. Charlize Theron, Kate Hudson and Jennifer Lopez have been notable fans of the bag and have often been seen carrying them around.

The issue gets murkier when the price difference between the McCartney and Madden bag is brought to notice. While Stella’s slouched fold-over tote is priced at $1195, the similar-looking bag from Steve Madden costs only $108!

Stella McCartney’s bag design has a diamond-cut chain trim while various colorful fabrics make up the tote. The Madden bag is very similar in look but since the matters have reached the courts now, the decision is best left to the higher authorities.

This is not the first time that Steve Madden has been issued a lawsuit because of copyright issues. It was only last year when Balenciaga had sued the brand for purposely replicating their motorcycle bag.
