Richard Burton's Iconic Watch Surpasses Estimates, Sells for $12K

Silverstone, the UK-based auction house, managed to sell the 1970 Omega Constellation originally belonging to Richard Burton for a whopping $12K.According to early estimates, the famous watch was to go under the hammer for anything between $7000 and $9000.

The famous watch recently came under a lot of media attention as the 18-karat yellow gold Omega Constellation was a gift to Burton from Elizabeth Taylor. The legendary actress gifted Burton the watch while staying at their Gstaad house in Switzerland during the 1970s.

A hand-written note by Burton’s nephew dated August 29, 2010 confirmed that the 39.9 mm x 32.9 mm automatic Omega Constellation belonged to Burton. The note read: “I confirm that this watch belonged to Richard Burton. My mother remembers Richard wearing it.”

The buyer paid approximately $12,600 for the famous Omega Constellation and according to the pre-sale agreement, $4050 from the total amount would be paid to the Alzheimer’s Society, according to the wish of the last owner, whose wife suffered from the disease for 15 years.

During the Silverstone Auctions’ Salon Privé sale, a total of 16 watches apart from a few automobiles went on sale.
