Green is an ethereal color. It is sensuous, bright, and lovely but more importantly has a calming aura surrounding it. But the beauty of this color heightens when it is found in crystals and gemstones. The luminescence found then is beyond comparison. Take for example an emerald. Apart from its superior quality, its high selling point is the beautiful green color that makes it stand out when placed among other gemstones. But emerald isn’t the only green-colored gemstone known to mankind. There are several other, lesser-known crystals and minerals that have this distinguishing color.
Mariposite may not be a name you have heard. But it is a wondrous crystal that is immensely beautiful and very rare to find. Gemstone enthusiasts and collectors would agree that Mariposite is a crystal for safekeeping. Though its worth may not be compared to that of emerald (which is found quite an in abundance), it still is a remarkable gemstone.
Mariposite is referred to crystals which are generally composed of micas and have small traces of chromium in them. The term is most often used for gemstones that belong to a group of green and white metamorphic rocks containing a significant amount of green mica. The term has been in use in this (and also various other contexts) since the late 1800s.
The origins of the name stem from the community of Mariposa in California, USA. The reason behind this is that the green rocks and green mica are quite abundantly found in this area. During the famous California Gold Rush period (between 1848 and 1855) many prospects who came looking for gold that was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma also learned that Mariposite rocks were the reason gold was found in the area. Many thus began to look for green and white rocks which led them to succeed in finding gold too. This knowledge that where green and white rocks are found gold is also present was later used by miners to dig gold in British Columbia, other parts of California, and Alaska.
Though the origin of the word is from California, mineralogists have found similar crystals in many parts of the United States (such as Arizona, Alaska, Colorado, Tennessee, Nevada, Washington, Utah, and also California). It is also found in other parts of the world such as Canada, Austria, China, Ireland, France, Japan, Spain, Papua New Guinea, Venezuela, and Sweden.
