Dioptase

When Dioptase was first discovered, it was called a ‘primitive version of emerald’. That was around the end of the 18th century when it was first mined in Kazakhstan. J.C. De Lamétherie made this first categorization in 1793.  Thankfully, this green colored mineral didn’t remain a poor cousin to the Emerald for long. In 1797, René Just Haüy a French mineralogist (and also the founding father of crystallography) named it Dioptase. Haüy is singularly responsible for opening the fascinating subject of crystallography to future generations.
