Rare Blue Moon Diamond To Be Up In Sotheby's Geneva Auction

One of the rarest and largest diamonds, fancied in a cushion-shaped vivid blue color, will be up for auction at Sotheby’s Geneva. Popularly known as the “Blue Moon”, the diamond will be among the leading gems to be up for auction at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels and Noble Jewels. The event is scheduled for November 11 in Geneva.

The diamond is known for its perfect cushion-shape, which has been brilliantly cut and is especially known for its exceptional clarity. The GIA has declared that it is internally flawless. Apart from GIA, other diamond specialists and scientists have also verified Blue Moon’s specialty. The Smithsonian Institution’s National Gem and Mineral Collection scientists who studied the diamond noted that it has “true and saturated” color throughout, and there are no other colors present.

“Blue Moon” weighs 12.03 carat and if auctioned successfully, will be the most expensive diamond to be sold in auction history. The diamond will be open for auction at an estimated price between $35 million and $55 million. If “Blue Moon” sells at the higher price range, it will easily make history.

Currently, the record of being the costliest diamond presented in an auction belongs to Graff Pink, a 24.78 carat fancy intense gem that was sold for $46.2 million in November 2010. Graff Pink was also auctioned by Sotheby’s Geneva.
